Everyone loves antiques and with Wines new popularity, antique wine gifts are all the rage.  You can find everything from the antique bottle of wine; or an antique cork screw.

Wine is a drink that only gets better with time.  It was not always so.  In the early days wine was kept in wooden barrels and was served as quickly as possible.  The wine decanter was popular in this period.  It was because they had no way to seal wine in a container.

Wine did not begin to be aged until the invention of the glass bottle and a cork was used to seal it.  This was first done in England.  Corks were used in other applications, one of which was to clean gun barrels.

Corks allowed for the wine to be aged.  This changed wine forever.  Serving a great old bottle of wine can make an event or party.  Serving it with antiques makes the event better.

Two antiques that can help you change the evening are:

·         Antique cork screw:   Pulling out the antique cork screw to uncork your awesome bottle of wine will have everyone at your event talking.  Most antique cork screws are made of silver and were made in the early 18th century.   One special favorite is from the late 1700’s and is called the French “tire-bouchon", or cage cork screw.   Some of these rare pieces are made of carved ivory, silver, wood, and even gold.   These cork screws had fantastic ornamental cages.  Using this cork screw will have everyone wanting to see and hold it.

·         Decanter:  The antique wine Decanter is another piece that can steal the show.   Most of these came from the period when wine could not be stored.  Wine had to be used quickly or it went sour.  Ornate wine decanters were made to dispense the wine.  Many of these decanters were glass and silver and very ornately made.  The handle, spout, and cover were usually made of silver that was ornately designed and stamped.  The glass too was exquisite.  Using an antique decanter to display and serve your fine wine can make your evening a fantastic affair.

Finding wine antiques can be hard.  You often will have to travel to specialty, high end antique shops to find them.  You can also search the Internet to find them.

Be prepared to pay a steep price for your wine antique.  It can make all the difference in planning a fantastic party.
